Electives During the week, U.V. offers extra optional classes to students who would like experience in certain subject areas that are not covered during regular after school activities. Electives begin after the regular S.O.S. program has ended for the day and most are open to both after school students and outside students in the community. Electives include Music, Art, Drama, Basketball, & Ballet. Each class has its own parameters for who may enroll. Music classes are limited to our leadership students who may take lessons in guitar, bass, piano, drums or voice. Many of the music students become involved in our teen worship band which practices on Wednesday evenings and leads worship on Fridays during Kids' Club. Art is open to any of the students and a large variety of art techniques are learned. This includes drawing, painting, collage etc. Eventually, U.V. will be including an additional art class to the leadership students which will focus solely on digital media art. Drama currently is offered only to leadership students and meets on Wednesday evenings for rehearsal and performs short skits at Kids' Club on Fridays. We would like to see this elective expand in the future to include more students for larger performances. Basketball is our most recent addition to the elective classes, and is offered to the middle and high school boys. The students run drills, learn techniques and the rules of the game during practice. The hope in the future is to start a boys team that can play in the local league. There are two ballet classes currently being run. One is for 2-3rd grade girls and the second class is for 4-6th grade girls. Both classes meet once a week to learn techniques of ballet and practice what they have already learned. At least once during the school year, both classes have a choreographed dance that they perform for the entire UV student and parent community. |
