Urban Vision has been blessed with an army of committed volunteers to help carry out our mission. Let’s meet one of those volunteers, Daria Tutolo. Daria volunteers with our after school program, Set on Success and was last year’s Volunteer of the Year. Let’s hear what she has to say about her volunteer experience here at Urban Vision.
Tell me how you first got involved with UV.
After retiring from teaching l wanted to continue working with kids. My church is involved with Urban Vision and I heard about an after-school tutoring program. I called and spoke with Regina about volunteering. She was very enthusiastic about my inquiry and told me about the SOS program.
What was your first impression of UV?
I was first impressed with the structure of the program. Not only do the children come for academic help, but, the focus is on Christ and their spiritual growth. I was impressed with all the enrichment programs that are offered. I also liked the fact that students and parents are held responsible and are rewarded for attendance and following the rules.
What’s the best part about volunteering at UV?
The best part about volunteering at UV is the environment. This is my second year of volunteering, and, I feel a part of the SOS family. The building is filled with smiling, enthusiastic children and adults. Even after a long day at school, the children still want to come to learn and have fun.
What do you wish other people know about UV?
I wish people would know the impact of UV and how God is working in the lives of the children, parents, volunteers and the community through UV.
Why do you support UV as opposed to other nonprofit groups?
I support UV because it is Christ-centered and is based on relationship building. Both are essential in order to have lasting change. Also, a core value of the program is to believe in each child’s unique worth and potential as a child of God. I feel strongly, as does UV, that by starting with the children and building relationships with the families the community will improve.
What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering at UV?
I would tell anyone who is thinking about volunteering at UV, “Just try it!”.
What do you do when you’re not volunteering?
When I’m not volunteering at UV, I like to volunteer for other programs, workout, bike and spend time with my husband and friends.
Thanks so much, Daria, for sharing and for all you do! Would you like to be a part of our volunteer Dream Team? We’d love to have you! Click here to get started.
