Meet the Volunteer – Tama Drenski

Urban Vision has been blessed with an army of committed volunteers to help carry out our mission.  Let’s meet one of those volunteers, Tama Drenski.  Tama volunteers with our after school program, Set on Success.   Let’s hear what she has to say about her volunteer experience here at Urban Vision.

Tell us how you first got involved with UV.
I heard about the SOS program at Urban Vision through our church, Christ Community Chapel. Since I have a teaching background, and work only 2 miles away, I thought that it would be a good volunteer opportunity for me. I am not in the teaching field anymore, and I miss working with children. Although I work full-time, I made arrangements to leave work early on Tuesdays, so that I can volunteer at SOS.

What was your first impression of UV?
I met with Nathan, who explained the mission of Urban Vision. I was impressed with so many aspects of the ministry, but to just pick three: their openness and faithfulness in sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ; their courage and determination; their commitment to the people of the North Hill neighborhood.

What’s the best part about volunteering at UV?
I feel blessed to have met the wonderful people who work and volunteer at Urban Vision. I have learned so much from the staff and the other volunteers. Although I originally volunteered to help the students learn, I feel that God is teaching me.

What do you wish other people know about UV?
Urban Vision offers so many different and fun ways for people to contribute, no matter what their gifts may be.

Why do you support UV as opposed to other nonprofit groups?
I support Urban Vision because it is truly Christ-centered. I admire the way that Urban Vision encourages the students to be fiscally responsible, and gives them a chance to earn money that they can spend to buy things for their family.

What might someone be surprised to know about you?
Some people think that I’m married to Santa Claus – haha (me with my husband Don).

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering at UV?
Try it…you’ll love it! You will be richly blessed!
What do you do when you’re not volunteering?
I am an intellectual property attorney at Renner Kenner Greive Bobak Taylor & Weber in downtown Akron. I work on patents, trademarks, copyrights, and licensing.
Thanks so much, Tama, for sharing and for all you do! Would you like to be a part of our volunteer Dream Team?   We’d love to have you!  Click here to get started.
