The Whirlwind

It has been a minute since I have last blogged because life has somewhat been a whirlwind! We celebrated our 25th anniversary at Urban Vision and oh how we praise Him for His faithfulness throughout the years. Seeing kids who have grown up in the ministry taking on positions of leadership at Urban Vision is literally unspeakable joy! Finishing my book and having opportunities to speak about issues of diversity of late has been taking me to places I know I need to anchor my soul deep to the One who steadies in the swirl around me. The hurricanes, earthquakes and fires that have been so devastating across our nation and world has made me feel all the smaller and a desire to cling tightly to the Sovereign one who rules and reigns despite the circumstances we find ourselves in.

THE STRENGTH OF THESE WINDS IS ENOUGH TO KNOCK ME OFF COURSE IF IT WASN’T FOR THE TETHERING OF MY HEART TO JESUS. SO MUCH IS HAPPENING AROUND ALL OF US SOMETIMES WE NEED SOME SERIOUS TIME TO PROCESS. WHO HAS TIME FOR THAT RIGHT?

What I have found is that time to process doesn’t just happen. I need to be intentional about taking time to get to that quiet spot in my soul that seems to be so cluttered with the noise of life. Nothing magical or mystical I can assure you but when I seek this time of uncluttered space I find that God meets me there. I don’t always get what He is speaking to me so easily in fact I read something in one of the prophets like Isaiah and wonder how this applies to me here and now. Yet it is the discipline of meeting and taking the time that the foundation of my heart is built in the word given in the time of meeting in the quietness of soul renews my vision and gives me what I need to stand in the storms of life.

“…..we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.”Hebrews 6:18b-20

Praise God Jesus is our hope who goes before and holds us steady! I will never forget a pastor who said we as believers are good at being storm avoiders. I mean who wants to face the storms that drenches us with so much uncertainty or suffering. Yet the pastor said this that has stuck with me ever since. He said,” Believers engage the storm and He will meet you there!” No we don’t have to be storm chasers but we can embrace our storms or whirlwinds with confidence that there is an eye to this storm that I know I will meet my Savior. Jesus has already been through and made a way for us too. Yes through His power the Holy Spirit gets me to that eye of the storm and in amazing wonder I find Him there and say it is well with my soul!

Eye of the Storm by Ryan Stevenson
In the eye of the storm, You remain in control
In the middle of the war, You guard my soul
You alone are the anchor, when my sails are torn
Your love surrounds, me in the eye of the storm……
