My name is Set Lay and I am a teacher for Set on Success and On Your Mark here at Urban Vision. I was born in 2000 at a refugee camp in Thailand and immigrated to Noth Hill, Akron with my family in 2006. We quickly found a church home, and I accepted Jesus as my personal savoir soon after during a Sunday School class. When I was in second grade, my parents learned about Urban Vision’s afterschool programs and I participated in them every year until I graduated Highschool.
The people at Urban Vision became like a second family to me so when I was given the opportunity to become an intern, I immediately said yes. This transitioned into the staff position I have now where I help lead our kindergarten readiness program, On Your Mark, and teach several classes for our afterschool program, Set on Success.
The opportunity to work at Urban Vision has been such a blessing because I love both my job and my neighborhood. In fact, what I love most about my job is being able to see the students work hard and grow. What I’m really proud of is when I can see the kids try their hardest on things that are difficult for them. Watching them succeed and achieve their goals makes me happy for them. North Hill is also second to none because of its diversity. I love to see people from different cultures walk down the street and go into a store from countries all around the world.
Working at Urban Vision is so encouraging and fun and it is exciting to see how the next generation of North Hill leaders continues to grow.
